Amazon one-ups Netflix in the gay department

Netflix has been gaying it up lately.

In February, it was announced that Ryan Murphy will bring two new series to the platform.

Then this month, the network announced a new teen comedy called Alex Strangelove about a high school senior coming to terms with his sexuality.

In addition to that, it’s been regularly shutting down homophobic and transphobic trolls on Twitter.

Now it’s Amazon’s turn.

The streaming giant has just added dozens and dozens of LGBTQ films that screened at Outfest in L.A. to Amazon Prime.

The films were published to Prime Video directly by their filmmakers or rights-holders, who will collect royalties based on customer viewing time.

Some of the titles include comedies Women Who Kill and all of the Eating Out films, as well as  Sinner In Mecca, winner of the 2015 Outfest Grand Jury Award for documentary, Open, the first American film to win the Teddy jury prize at the Berlin Film Festival, and cult classic G.B.F.

Founded by UCLA students in 1982, Outfest remains the one of the largest LGBTQ film festivals in the world.

“These are challenging times for many and reports of violence against LGBTQ citizens are on the rise,” said Outfest executive director Christopher Racster.

He continues, “I still believe, though, in the power of our stories to change that narrative… It is a relationship like this with Prime Video Direct that will carry our stories across the widest network and reach the most individuals.”
