Whether it’s Jaws, Sharknado or a local news story about an attack on the beach, our fascination with sharks is never-ending, and usually comes with a negative connotation. Tom Daley wants people to change their perceptions about sharks. So much so that the Olympic diver recently stripped down and transformed himself into one with the help of some body-painting artists.
“I’ve always loved sharks. They’ve always really fascinated me,” Daley stated about the oceanic predator. “So today, I’m going to try and combat some of the misconceptions about sharks because they’re awesome animals.”
Tom teamed up with Sea World Parks and Entertainment for the project, which is being done in conjunction with UK Shark Week (August 2-8). The entire transformation was done by two artists and took four hours to complete.
In addition to raising awareness of the threats sharks face in the wild, Daley hopes that his involvement will also highlight the role sharks play in the ecosystem, as well as the importance of ocean conservation as a whole.
Daley has promised that he’ll be diving deeper into the world of sharks “very soon.”
